What is Holding Space?

“I’m here to hold space for you.”

That’s great, but… What does “holding space” actually mean? It means being fully present for another person, without judgement, with love, and with compassion. It means being present with unconditional support, listening fully, and allowing that person to come to their own decisions in their own time.

As a Reiki practitioner, my job is to facilitate healing, and holding space for another person is an important part of that job. Being open to listening, without judgement, while the person opens their soul. I allow that opening to take place in a safe space, where they can vent, or weep, or even laugh, knowing that they are in a judgement free zone, where they will find support and compassion while they figure out what they need to do, while they allow their emotions to come to the surface, while they figure out which direction they want their life to take.

Holding space is providing unconditional love. For some, it may be the first time they’ve experienced love with no strings attached, and it can be overwhelming. Some people find themselves trembling, or weepy, or bubbling over with giggles. Some people fall into a deep sleep while in the Reiki session, finally feeling safe enough to let their guard down and truly relax.

As a Reiki practitioner, holding space is a vital part of what I do. I make space for Reiki to do its work, for unconditional love to flow, and to facilitate the healing that needs to happen.

I’m here to hold space for you.
